Reviews

For the 2021 relaunch of the site, with people currently asking a lot more questions and doing a lot more research than normal due to COVID-19, I wanted to help by adding reviews to this site.

But I’m not interested in “normal” reviews. I’m not going to post the style of review that would fit best in a travel magazine – top 10 of things you have to do before you die, info about places I haven’t visited, reviews of locations from a commercial viewpoint.

The only reviews that I will post here are experience based reviews, based on my real trips around the world. They will be written from the point of view of somebody who loves travelling so that you have an idea what the place is really like.

There are enough reviews written by people who are being paid to write something positive as a marketing tool, who are reviewing something from a commercial viewpoint not as a genuine traveller, or who are reviewing something just to drive traffic to their site. That is not for me, and I won’t write reviews like that.

For that reason the reviews section of this page will not be as large as those on other sites, but it will contain real life experiences and first hand accounts designed to help you make travel decisions. Additionally my reviews are based on what I liked and disliked, and the experiences I had. They don’t use points or star ratings which usually focus on facilities and which are fairly meaningless on the types of trips that I like – where the journey and the experience are more important than whether a hotel has lots of facilities that tick boxes.

That style of review has helped me a lot in the past, and so I have tried to replicate it here so that my travel experiences can help other people.

(Having said that, if somebody wanted to pay for me to travel somewhere then I wouldn’t say no – but any reviews would be written impartially from the first person point of view, based on my real experiences, and not be written from a purely marketing point of view with the aim of increasing sales or web traffic).
